ワンポイント英会話　～簡単な英語の序数～

前回のワンポイント英会話では、会話中の話に対する適切な対応表現を勉強しました。

■今回のワンポイント
　今回のワンポイント英会話は、英語による序数について説明します。
　序数というのは、first, second, third, fourth（一つ目、二つ目、三つ目、四つ目）など、順番を示す言葉です。これを書く場合は、文字だけで書くか、文字と数字を組んで書くことができます。(例えば、1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4thなど)
　次の表をご覧になったら、もっとたくさんの序数の表現方法が分かると思います。

1	1st	first	11	11th	eleventh
2	2nd	second	12	12th	twelfth
3	3rd	third	13	13th	thirteenth
4	4th	fourth	14	14th	fourteenth
5	5th	fifth	15	15th	fifteenth
6	6th	sixth	16	16th	sixteenth
7	7th	seventh	17	17th	seventeenth
8	8th	eighth	18	18th	eighteenth
9	9th	ninth	19	19th	nineteenth
10	10th	tenth	20	20th	twentieth

21, 21st, twenty-first; 22, 22nd, twenty-second; 23, 23rd, twenty-third;
24, 24th, twenty-fourth; 25, 25th, twenty-fifth など
(fifth, ninth, twelfth と nineteenth の綴りにご注意ください。

次の例のような使い方が一般的です。
　　例1）I live on 42nd (Forty-second) Street in Manhattan.
　　例2）Terrorism will be a serious problem in the 21st century.
　　例3）George W. Bush is the 43rd president of the United States.
　　例4）The fiftieth anniversary is called the "golden anniversary."
　　例5）The one millionth customer won a free car.
　　例6）The queen of England is Queen Elizabeth II (Queen Elizabeth the second).

主として、王様や女王の名前の後のローマ数字は序数として読みます。（例：Henry VIII は Henry the Eighth（ヘンリー８世）と言います。）但し、第２次世界大戦は、「World War II」 と書きますが、「World War Two」と言います。しかし、「the Second World War」と書かれている場合は、そのまま読みます。

使いなれたらとても簡単ですので、意識的に会話の中に入れてみてください。また、英語の本などを読む習慣を作れば、序数やほかのいろいろな英語が少しずつ上達するでしょう。
