ワンポイント英会話　～英語でお願いする　第7回～

前回のワンポイント英会話では、顔の特徴を英語でどう説明するかについて記載しました。

■今回のワンポイント
　　今回は、ひげ、めがねなどを外観の一部として英語で説明する方法を紹介したいと思います。

　◇　Facial Hair ひげ
　　　beard** あごひげ
　　　mustache 口ひげ
　　　sideburns もみあげ

　　＊　英和辞典では、whiskers は「ほおひげ」と訳しているが、ネイティ
　　　　ヴは、あごひげのことも whiskers と言います。猫のような動物の
　　　　ひげも whiskers と言います。

　　＊＊beard, mustache, sideburn などを全部ある人もいますが、いちいち
　　　　呼ぶのは大変なので、beard一語で代表させます。この場合、必ずあご
　　　　ひげ（beard）が含まれていることが条件となります。例えば、

　　○　Santa has a beard, mustache and sideburns. ではなく、
　　　　Santa has a beard.
　　　と言います。下線の部分に注意をしながら、次の例（例1～例3）をご参
　　　照ください。

　　　 照ください。

　【例1】： Two members of the rock group, ZZ Top, have long beards.
　　　　　（ ZZ Top というロックバンドのメンバーの二人は長いひげを生やし
　　　　　　ている。）

　【例2】： Just before he was elected president, Lincoln received a
　　　　　　letter from an eleven-year-old girl asking him to grow a
　　　　　　beard.
　　　　　（リンカーンが大統領に当選する直前、11歳の少女から、ひげを生や
　　　　　　すようお願いする手紙をもらった。）

　【例3】： Charlie Chaplain's mustache was his trademark.
　　　　　（チャーリー・チャプリンの口ひげは、彼のトレードマークだった。）

　◇　Glasses めがね
　　　rim, frame フレーム
　　　lens レンズ
　　　めがねに対して最もよく使われている動詞は have と wear です。過去形
　　や過去分詞の場合もよくあります。例えば、
　　○　I've worn glasses since I was a child.
　　　（私は、子供の時からめがねをかけている。）

　次のような例もあります。

　【例1】： John Lennon wore a pair of wire-rim glasses with round
　　　　　　lenses.
　　　　　（ジョン・レノンは、金属フレームにまるいレンズのめがねをはめて
　　　　　　いた。）

　【例2】： Did she have glasses? No, she didn't.
　　　　　（彼女はめがねがあったか？いいえ、なかった。）

　人の外観を正確に英語で説明することはちょっと難しいのですが、今回、前回、
前々回のワンポイントで分かりやすくなりましたら、幸いです。がんばってくだ

　◇　Nose 鼻
　　　big 大きい
　　　small 小さい
　　　long 長い
　　　flat 平らの
　◇　Mouth 口
　　　large, big* 大きい
　　　small 小さい

　「He has a big mouth.」というように決り文句の「big mouth」を使うと
「彼は口が軽い」という意味もあるので、「His mouth is big.」と言えば誤解
されないはずです。

　◇　Lip(s) くちびる
　　　thin 細い
　　　thick 太い

　会話では、次の例のように、これらの項目述べることができます。

　◇　Police Officer (PO): Mr. And Mrs. Ando, I'm Sergeant Kuminski
　　　of the LAPD. Did you see the man who crashed into your car
　　　before he drove away?

　Mr. Ando: Yes
　PO: Okay, what did he look like?
　Mr. Ando: Well, he was kind of fat and he had short brown hair.
　PO: Was he white, black, Hispanic, Asian...?
　Mr. Ando: Oh, he was white.
　PO: How about his face?
　Mr. Ando: Oh, I don't remember.
　Mrs. Ando: Well, I remember...His eyes were hazel and he wore glasses. He had a
　　　　　　 big nose and a big mouth with thick lips.
　PO: Thank you. If you saw him again, would you recognize him?
　Mrs. Ando: Yes, I think so.
　PO: Great. I think we have a picture of him at the police station. Could you come
　　　this afternoon to look at it?
　Mrs. Ando: Sure.

　会話の内容が分かりましたか。顔の特徴について部分は Mrs. Ando の最初のせりふだけですね。
